'Nothing But Blue' Turns an Unlikely Friendship Into a 9/11 Tribute

A chance meeting, a Wall Street eyewitness to 9/11 and an unlikely friendship inspired a song about remembrance, sacrifice and unity.

Cary came from Wall Street, spending much of his professional life in financial markets, including senior roles at J.P. Morgan and Citigroup. Jarvis came from a very different road, one shaped by addiction, faith, recovery and a determination to use music to reach people who are struggling.

Years ago, their paths crossed anyway.

What began as a chance encounter became friendship, mentorship and trust. Cary does not try to explain it away as coincidence. The words he uses are “divine intervention.”

That unlikely relationship eventually helped inspire “Nothing But Blue,” a new Country/Americana song performed by Dylan Jarvis, written by award-winning songwriter Scott Davis of LifeOfRhyme Music Publishing, produced by Jeremy Johnson at Studio 217 and executive produced by Joseph Cary.

The song was inspired directly by September 11, 2001.

Its writing began with conversations between Jarvis and Davis. Dylan shared stories about Cary’s experiences, his work surrounding military service and remembrance, and the ideas of sacrifice and responsibility that had stayed with him since 9/11. Davis drew from those stories while bringing his own memories and emotions from that day into the writing.

The result is a song shaped by shared memory rather than one person’s experience.

Davis brings an accomplished songwriting history to the project. He co-wrote Rush of Fools’ “Undo,” named ASCAP’s 2008 Christian Song of the Year, and also co-wrote Kutless’ “What Faith Can Do.”

Then came another connection no one had planned.

Producer Jeremy Johnson’s birthday is September 11. He was not born in 2001, but to those involved, discovering that the producer entrusted with bringing a song inspired by September 11 to life was himself born on September 11 felt like one more unlikely thread in a story already full of them.

Cary’s connection to remembrance runs deep. Honor Day grew from small Fleet Week appreciation dinners into a major military appreciation event focused on honoring service, educating younger generations and supporting military families.

That commitment also helped give permanence to its message through the Eagle Oaks 9/11 Memorial, which incorporates 5,800 pounds of World Trade Center steel.

But “Nothing But Blue” is not intended only for those who remember September 11 firsthand.

A generation has now grown up knowing 9/11 through photographs, video, classrooms and stories told by others. Some were not yet born. Others know the date without fully understanding how profoundly that morning changed the United States, the lives that were lost, the people who ran toward danger and the lasting impact the attacks had on American history.

The song is meant to carry part of that history forward through music — not as a lecture, but as an invitation to remember how that day felt, honor those who were lost and help ensure that September 11 never becomes simply another date in a history book.

“If ‘Nothing But Blue’ can help someone remember, help someone learn, or prompt someone to pause and recognize those who serve, then it has done what we hoped,” Cary said. “Freedom is not free.”

The release comes as Jarvis enters an important new chapter as an artist. Beyond “Nothing But Blue,” he has five new songs preparing for release with Grammy-winning Nashville producer and engineer Jeff Huskins, whose credits include work with Lainey Wilson, Eric Church, Jason Aldean, Ashley McBryde, Jelly Roll and Carrie Underwood, along with more than 60 Billboard No. 1s.

For now, the focus is “Nothing But Blue” — a song about people, families, sacrifice, shared grief and carrying the memory of September 11 forward to another generation.
